5 Days Nyungwe Forest and Mount Nyiragongo Hike

On this day, you will be picked up from Kigali by a representative of our company who will be on time and begin the drive to Nyungwe Forest, which is renowned for housing 13 primate species and having the most fascinating canopy walk. It takes a while to get there, but the drive is well worth because there are so many sights to see along the way, such as coffee plantations, local communities working on their farms, a breathtaking view of Mount Nyiragongo, and Rwanda’s rolling hills. Enjoy a meal en route, then once you arrive at the park, proceed to the lodge to check in, have dinner, and spend the night.

Get up early for breakfast, pack enough water for drinking and some snacks, and then meet your safari driver for a transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing before entering the forest to trek chimpanzees. As the park is home to 13 different species of primates and other small mammals, not to mention numerous species of birds, butterflies, and the fascinating vegetation cover, you may have the chance to see other primates while chimpanzee trekking. The journey takes anywhere from two to five hours, but once you locate the chimpanzees, you are given an hour to spend with them in their presence so you can get to know them better. Just in time for lunch, head back to the lodge.

After lunch, you’ll be taken back into the forest for an afternoon canopy walk, which starts at Uwinka and extends to a distance of about 150 meters and 50 meters above ground—the height of the tree, according to estimates—starts at that point. More wildlife species, such as mammals, birds, butterflies, and stunning forest flora species, will be visible during the canopy walk. Additionally, you will be able to see the entire Nyungwe Forest National Park from above, including its entire exciting interior. You will be brought back to the lodge later in the evening for dinner and overnight rest.

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your lodge before checking out and beginning the drive to Gisenyi. You’ll arrive in time for lunch, check into your lodge, eat lunch there, and then spend the rest of the afternoon at the beach at your leisure. A boat cruise on Lake Kivu, a walking safari, sports, and many other activities can be enjoyed while at the beach to brighten your afternoon. Later on, make your way to your lodge for dinner and the night.

On this day, you must rise as early as possible for breakfast, pack enough water and a lunchbox, and meet your safari driver so that he or she can drive you to Goma via the Grande Barrier border point, where you will be cleared at the tourism office before joining the convoy to be driven directly to Kibati ranger post, where you can join other hikers in time for a briefing. Following the briefing, the hike itself begins at precisely 10:30 am, with hikers being protected by armed rangers as they ascend Mount Nyiragongo. Like any other climbing adventure, the ascent is a little taxing and strenuous, but as soon as you reach the top, you will forget about the exhaustion and instead take in the breathtaking view of a roiling lava lake at Nyiragongo’s summit and other nearby volcanoes. You will spend the night at the summit, where you can see Goma City and the lava lake, which gets brighter, especially if it rains during the night, giving you the chance to make unforgettable memories.

On this day, rise at Nyiragongo’s summit and join other trekkers, park rangers, and porters as you begin the descent back to Kibati. There, you will be picked up and driven back to Kigali with lunch along the way. Once you arrive in Kigali, Rwanda, take a city tour before being dropped off at the specified location, Airport or Hotel.
