Rwanda is one of the smallest countries in Africa, but it has one of the highest bird populations on the continent. It’s no surprise that the majority of experts rank it among the top five locations for those looking for an enjoyable birding experience when you consider the abundance of birding “specials” to be seen and the primate experiences as a bonus. The Albertine Eco-Region, which spans six nations and is considered to be the center of the Afromontane habitat, is made up of a chain of mountains that were uplifted and formed by volcanic activity. Over 40 bird species, 34 mammals, 117 butterflies, 34 amphibians, and 16 reptiles are among the exceptional fauna and flora endemism found in this belt. It makes sense why it’s the most famous place with regard to ecology.
Rwanda has over 700 different bird species that are dispersed across protected areas, swamps, and agricultural areas. The Akagera National Park, Nyungwe National Park, and Volcanoes National Park are the three protected areas where most birding takes place. You must be willing to spend a lot of time outdoors and engage in strenuous hiking in some areas if you want to enjoy bird watching in Rwanda. For instance, hiking up and down the mountainous areas is a significant part of birding in the national parks of Nyungwe and Volcanoes.
When you arrive in Rwanda, you will be greeted by our Dav Safaris tour guide, who will welcome you to the Land of “a Thousand Hills.” Your safari will begin with a trip transfer to the Nyungwe Forest National Park in the south. We will arrive at the lodge/hotel for dinner and the night after a 4-5 hour journey.
After breakfast, you can begin your second day of your Rwandan birding safari by entering the Nyungwe forest to begin your birding adventure. Because this is a full-day activity that includes hikes and an additional nature walk, we suggest that you bring a lunch with you. Your guide will assist you in identifying various birds in the dense canopies, and what’s even more exciting is that there’s a good chance you’ll run into various monkey species while searching for birds. You must bring a lot of drinking water with you because you will be birding for the entire day in order to stay hydrated. After dinner, head back to your safari lodge to spend the night.
After a hearty breakfast, get up and head out as soon as possible so you can be at the park’s administrative center in time for a briefing on the fundamentals of a successful chimpanzee trekking adventure. An average day of chimpanzee tracking lasts no longer than four hours before you return to the lodge for lunch. After leaving the lodge, you will travel to the Volcanoes National Park in the north. Dinner and a night’s rest are available at the Kinigi Guest House.
After an early breakfast, you will travel to Kinigi’s park headquarters for a briefing on the gorilla trekking experience. You will be guided by a designated trekking guide to start the search for the mountain gorillas while carrying your packed lunch and other necessary items for the trek. Depending on the movement of the designated gorilla group, the activity lasts anywhere from one to five hours. You will be led to the lodge for more refreshments after the gorilla trek to help you recover from the breathtaking yet amazing adventure of the trek. You’ll be entertained later on in the evening by a group of traditional dancers, Rwandan songs, dancing, and drumming, among other things.
You’ll start off today by going on an exciting golden monkey trek in Volcanoes National Park. You will return to the lodge for lunch and then leave to visit Dian Fossey’s grave after spending 3 to 4 hours with the golden monkeys. You can hike at the Karisoke Research Center to learn more about Dian Fossey’s life, her efforts to preserve these lovely animals, and the legacy she left behind. For dinner and overnight stay, return to the lodge.
On this last day, you will eat breakfast before leaving the hotel and beginning your return trip to Kigali, the country’s capital. Depending on when you are going, we might take you on a quick city tour before releasing you to catch your flight home.
